Oprah Winfrey may wear a lot of hats, but philanthropist is the biggest one.
1. Hurricane Katrina
In 1998, Oprah Winfrey created a charity that supported charities and provided grants to non-profit organizations worldwide. In the midst of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, the network raised over $11 million in relief efforts. (Winfrey personally donated $10 million to the cause.)
2. “You Get A Car!”
Oprah Winfrey is infamous for spreading the wealth (especially to her staff and studio audience). In 2004, Winfrey surprised the “Oprah Show” audience with 276 new Pontiac G-6s — a free car for each and every one of them!
3. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls
A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and Oprah Winfrey believes this wholeheartedly. In 2007, Winfrey founded Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, a female boarding school for girls of impoverished backgrounds. Winfrey spent over $40 million on the project to ensure that the academically gifted girls of South Africa are able to flourish.
4. Morehouse College
As of 2012, Oprah Winfrey has given away over 400 scholarships to students of Morehouse College in Atlanta.
Most recently, Winfrey has donated $12 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
