Cardinals Nation is mourning the loss of another baseball legend. Tonight Hall of Famer Bob Gibson passed away at the age of 84, after battling pancreatic cancer.

Bob Gibson played for the St. Louis Cardinals for 17 seasons (1959-1975) and in during that time he was a:

  • 2-time World Series Champion (in 1964 and 1967)
  • 2-time World Series MVP

  • 1968 N.L. MVP

Gibson’s number (45) was retired by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1975 and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, during his first year of eligibility in 1981.

The Early Years:

Pack Robert Gibson known to the world as Bob Gibson was born on November 9, 1935 in Omaha, NB. Gibson earned a scholarship to play basketball for Creighton University in the late 1950’s. In 1957 Gibson signed to play baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals but delayed his start a year so he could play basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters, as a traveling member.

Eventually Bob would decide to only play professional baseball and that decision would lead to Bob joining forces with Bill White and Curt Flood to start a Civil Rights Movement with-in Major League Baseball. The men’s goal was for all of the players to stay in the same hotel rooms and use the same clubhouse.

Fun Fact: The St. Louis Cardinals would become one of the first professional sports teams to end segregation.

After Hall Of Fame Career:

Bob’s baseball career didn’t end after he retired in 1975. In 1981, Gibson joined legendary coach Joe Torre’s coaching staff where he would stay until 1984 and then rejoin the coaching staff in 1995 when Torre came to St. Louis to coach the Cardinals.

It was in 2019 that the late Bob Gibson announced he was battling pancreatic cancer.
