Yesterday (July 16), R. Kelly, 52, was denied bond and will stay locked up. Last week, he was arrested on a 13-count indictment that includes sex crimes and obstruction of justice. Federal prosecutors in New York last week also indicted R. Kelly in a separate case for coercing women and girls into sexual activities. His lawyer, Steve Greenberg said R. Kelly was not a flight risk and should be allowed to post bail. “The man is not a flight risk. The man never missed a court date in the 2000s when he was charged with a case. He hasn’t missed a court date on the state case that’s pending now. It’s the worst-kept secret that he was going to get charged federally, and he hasn’t fled. So he’s certainly not a flight risk. He’s not a danger to anybody at all.” Prosecutors labeled him “an extreme danger to the community, especially underage girls.’’ The Illinois indictment accuses R. Kelly of abusing five girls:
- A 12- or 13-year old girl in 1996 or 1997
- A 17-year-old girl in 1997
- A 15-year-old girl in 1996
- A 16-year-old girl in 1999
- A 13- or 14-year-old girl in 1997 or 1998.
R. Kelly’s next hearing is scheduled for September 4.
