Chaka Khan was on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live,” on Monday. Andy asked Chaka how the conversation went with Kanye West about 1985’s “Through the Fire” that Kanye sampled for his debut single changing ‘Fire’ to ‘Wire’. Kanye’s song peaked at No. 15 on the pop charts. It was a personal song for Kanye. He was in a very bad car accident two years earlier, that caused his jaw to be wired shut. Chaka said, “He called me when he just got out of the hospital. He said, ‘You were so instrumental in my healing process. I changed the words a little bit to the song but I had to eat through a wire. Jaw’s wired shut through a straw.’ It meant that much to me. It really got my heart, tugged at my string. I was like, ‘Yeah, use it.’” Chaka didn’t like Kanye’s version. “Then when it came out, […] I was pissed. I thought it was a little insulting. Not insulting: I thought it was stupid! If I’d known he was gonna do that, I would have said, ‘Hell no.’” Did she tell Kanye how she felt? “I didn’t. What can I say?” The best way to tell him is silence. And give him crickets.” But she did get royalties.

Also, Chaka Khan’s ex-manager, Olasumbo Kuti claims she was hired to be Chaka’s manager in 2013. She claims in a lawsuit that when she was fired in 2017 Chaka owed her a lot of money that she hasn’t been paid. In court papers, Kuti claims Chaka owes her $236,600 for her business and personal management services. Kuti also claims she owns 5 percent of 3 of Chaka’s businesses, and Kuti wants to be paid for that too. Chaka’s camp has not responded. Read here for that.
