1988, Bobby McFerrin started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’, the first a-cappella record to be a No.1. It made No.2 in the UK. The song would go on to win Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

1988 American heptathlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee sets new world record 7,291 points to win the gold medal at the Seoul Olympics.

1988 Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson breaks his own 100m world record with a time of 9.79 at the Seoul Olympics. He was disqualified 3 days later for use of the drug stanozolol. Carl Lewis is awarded gold and world record of 9.92.
