Do you remember The Great Debaters based on the true story of Melvin B. Tolson from Wiley College? Well, the legacy of Wiley College’s debate team still lives on!
Wiley College has been given a grant to create an HBCU Speech & Debate League and Christopher Medina the director of Forensics and debate coach at Wiley College is excited about it. “Before this tournament that we are creating, right now we’ve got about 34 HBCU’s signed up for this tournament.”
The tournament will take place from January 26 and 27 of 2018. “The first inaugural tournament will be at Wiley College,” explained Medina.
As we go into the Thanksgiving season, Medina left us with some tips on debating to get ready for those family discussions! “Far too often people wait to speak rather than listen,” explains Medina. Instead, we need to learn, “how to listen, analyze and then rebut.”
