Sad new in the world of Hip-Hop,
Albert Johnson better known to millions of hip-hop fans as Prodigy one half of Mobb Deep, has died in Las Vegas. Rapper Nas broke the news in a IG post:
His publicist says he was hospitalized “a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth.”
The publicist also stated … “the exact cause of death has not been determined.”
Mobb deep is one of my favorite rap groups and “Survival Of The Fittest” is one of the dopeness beats in hip-hop….period!
Prodigy and his partner, Havoc, formed Mobb Deep in NYC in the early ’90s. Their biggest hits include “Quiet Storm” and “Shook Ones.
Hip-Hop magazine XXL was sent an official statement from Mobb Deep’s publicist:
It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
Prodigy was in Vegas over the weekend performing with the Art of Rap tour … with Ghostface Killah, Onyx, KRS-One, Ice-T to name a few. Mobb Deep performed Saturday night. R.I.P Prodigy…you will be truly missed!
