Annie Malone was an amazing woman who left a legacy of strength and compassion. She built an empire with a business plan that has been copied by many successful businesses through the years. She certainly left the world a better place than she found it. Her desire to help the community drove her to establish the Annie Malone Children and Family Services in 1888 as the St. Louis Colored Orphan’s Home. At that time in history, there was no place that would take in or care for minority children.
The agency has grown into a multi-service center in the community, that deals with social and education needs of children and families in crisis and at-risk throughout St. Louis.
She wanted to do something else that brought the community together and that birthed the Annual Annie Malone Mad Day Parade. It’s been 105 years and the parade is still bringing families and the community together.
