Legendary rap collective Run-D.M.C. will be honored by the Grammys with a lifetime achievement award. The group, known for hits like “Walk This Way” and “My Adidas,” will make history as the first hip-hop artists to receive the award. “Each year, the Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees,” said Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy in a statement. “Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.Rev. Run took to Twitter to share the exciting news. “I just got a call from the Grammys!!,” he posted. “They shocked me!! We’re the first rappers to get this award!! Shocked! Grateful! God is good!!! Winning Powerball Ticket Sold in California

The Powerball craze has finally come to an end. On Wednesday, California Lottery officials announced that a winning ticket had been sold in Chino Hills, a city located near Los Angeles. The winning numbers were 4, 8, 19, 27, 34, and the Powerball was 10. “We have a winner in California! A jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Chino Hills,” tweeted the California Lottery. “We’re still awaiting results from other states.” If no one’s numbers matched, the Powerball jackpot would have risen to $2 billion. The Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. People from Canada even took it upon themselves to cross the border and purchase tickets for a chance to win the prize. Read more.


Lafayette Theater Shooter Inspired by Dylann Roof

The journal of John Houser, the 59-year-old man who carried out a deadly shooting at the Grand 16 Theater in Lafayette, La. gives an eerie look into his train of thought before the incident occurred. On the last page of his journal, he wrote that he hoped to grab national attention after the shooting. “No matter how perverted the presentation of these notes, or censorship, the contribution is made,” wrote Houser. “Therefore I leave it all, in hopes of truth, my death all but assured.” The notes feature a detailed play-by-play. He wrote “6:33 Trainwreck 7:15;” the start time of the movie where he took the lives of two people and wounded nine others. In the journal, he mentions Dylann Roof, the man who carried out the massacre at a historically Black church in Charleston, S.C. “Had Dylan [sic] Roof reached political maturity he would have seen the word is not n****r, but liberal. But thank you for the wake up call Dylann,” he wrote. He also penned thoughts about politics and Fox News. Read more.


Rutina Wesley Nabs Lead Role in Ava DuVernay’s OWN Project

Rutina Wesley, star of the hit show True Blood, has nabbed the lead role in Ava DuVernay’s upcoming OWN series called Queen Sugar. The series is centered on a New Orleans journalist whose family inherits a sugar cane farm. Family dynamics change when her sister moves back to New Orleans to help oversee the land.
