The Recording Academy is trying really hard to right its wrongs of the past at this year’s Grammy Awards.
The president of the Academy announced on Wednesday that Run D.M.C — one of the most influential rap groups in hip-hop history — will be receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards for musicians “who have made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.”
Run D.M.C., the three-part group consisting of Joseph “Run” Simmons, Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels, and the late Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, has, surprisingly, never received a Grammy. They were nominated for one, however, for their album, Raising Hell — it was nominated for Best R&B Vocal Performance because there was not a hip-hop category at the time.
Neil Portnow, Academy president, said in a statement, “Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees. Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”
Other winners of the prestigious award this year will be Earth Wind & Fire, in addition to, Jefferson Airplane, Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Herbie Hancock, and Linda Ronstadt.
The 58th Annual Grammy Awards will air Feb. 15 on CBS.
