Homogeneity is the standard by which people invite others to social events. What inhibits Christians’ ability to invite those who are different from them? Jesus has a message of social justice that reverses the custom and compels people to welcome all people.
Jesus’ teaching regarding humility and hospitality challenges us to evaluate our social priorities and goals. Exposure of our true priorities might reveal that they are aligned with God’s kingdom and works of mercy and compassion. The Lord’s banquet table has been set for all to come without barriers of sin, social ostracism, social status, or rank. All are welcome to the table of the Lord. A ministry to the homeless and disenfranchised in our society is a gift to those whom Jesus invites to His own table of love and sacrifice, forgiveness and compassion.
Lord, teach us the ways of spiritual and social hospitality. Infuse Your love into our spirits so that we might truly be hosts of those abandoned and abused by the cruelties of life. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
