Once hailed as the fastest man on the planet, sprinter Michael Johnson has stepped knee deep into some controversy. Michael Johnson believes his talent as a runner came because he is a descendant of slavery.

Johnson was recently interviewed by the Daily Mail’s Sally Beck when she asked for his thoughts on the upcoming London Olympics. Michael Johnson’s response has been causing quite a stir. When Michael Johnson spoke about the Olympics, he stated, “All my life I believed I became an athlete through my own determination, but it’s impossible to think that being descended from slaves hasn’t left an imprint through the generations.”

Before concluding the interview, Johnson continued on, “Difficult as it was to hear, slavery has benefited descendants like me — I believe there is a superior athletic gene in us. Over the last few years, athletes of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-American descent have dominated athletics finals. It’s a fact that hasn’t been discussed openly before. It’s a taboo subject in the States but it is what it is. Why shouldn’t we discuss it?”

Michael Johnson set a world record that still stands today in the 400 meter dash. He ran the 400 meter race in 43.18 seconds.

Is Michael Johnson correct or is he just talking out the side of his neck?
